Plastic waste as a high-quality secondary raw material
In Germany, a total of 6.15 million tons of plastic waste is generated annually. If they are understood as raw materials, they can be reprocessed by mechanical recycling. Only if pure, high-quality recyclate is available will increased use in an equivalent area of application be possible. The example of PET bottles clearly shows that the goal can be achieved.
Use of recyclate
To date, 1.76 million tons of recyclate are processed annually throughout Germany, representing only 12.3% of the total amount of plastics processed.
The proportion of recyclate used in the manufacture of new plastic products depends on the industry and varies significantly. While 34% recyclate is processed in the agricultural industry, only 3% plastic recyclate is used in electrical appliances.
